ABR Blog
Leonid’s point about “attention to details and confidence in ABR” made me think.  AND Yes, I am going to fine-tune my technique.  It is a new phase of ABR for us nowadays mainly because of our Junegee being more mature and patient(3 years old!!).  We are doing a lot more ABR manual exercises than we have done lately.  But I have to admit that sometimes I would wonder how many...

Perspective
It is so great that we can now do manual exercises while Junegee sleeps.  I wonder sometimes.  Was it something that we should have tried long time ago?  I don’t know.  Maybe.  Junegee is a boy now, not a baby.  He is so much more stable than before.  All those sleepless nights with multiple wake-ups and anxiety over his allergies…  Having a baby brother also made him grow up so much. ...

ABR@Night
For the past two nights, we’ve changed up our nighttime schedule - Jiyeon is giving the baby a bath and nursing him earlier than before, and then when she’s done, I give Junegee to her, and I take the baby and put him down, while Jiyeon reads books to Junegee before he goes to sleep. While he’s falling asleep, Jiyeon starts doing manual, and then she continues to do it for quite...

New beginning
Well, is it?  Is it new beginning to go back to see our PT, Molly outside of Early Intervention?  The answer is Yes, it is.  We aged out of Early Intervention when Junegee had his 3rd birthday.  It was nervous but hopeful time and school was the new and exciting possibility.  And that was that.  We tried and it didn’t work out.  Now we are going back to see Molly at her center.  I feel good...

Growth
The latest speculation from Jiyeon is that while we’re not seeing as much “progress” for Junegee as we had been, that perhaps this is because he’s growing, and what the ABR is doing for him is allowing to keep up with the growth spurt rather than having the growth itself contribute to any musculo-skeletal deformities that he has. So, on balance, we both agree that not...

The Miracle League →
I just sent an email to the organizers of this, which according to their website: With the help of community volunteers and companies, the design and construction of the first Miracle League complex was underway. The complex would include a custom-designed field with a cushioned rubberized surface to help prevent injuries, wheelchair accessible dugouts, and a completely flat surface to eliminate...

Here’s a video from a couple of days ago with Junegee swimming in our little pool in the back yard.  Every day, he’s doing things that just months before, we wouldn’t have thought possible. It’s amazing how a body can be changed.

School for Junegee
We had our meeting with the school board to talk about Junegee’s future in the public school system, and good news:  They said he was disabled.  This may seem odd to put in the “good news” category, but we had heard stories that the county has historically been very stingy in classifying kids with disabliities as disabled, and if they don’t get that classification, they get...

Well, that's new
I was awakened last night at around 3:30 AM to Jiyeon telling me that the machine was making a funny noise, and when I went into Junegee’s room to see what was going on, he had ripped the hose right off the bladder in his sleep.  Let’s hope this was a one-time fluke, because we need to do the machine while he’s sleeping.

Playground - a set on Flickr →
Junegee loves being outside, but since he can’t walk, it’s been hard for him to spend much meaningful time out of doors. So, we tore up our patio area in the back yard, and built a play area for him. It’s covered with indoor/outdoor carpet, and gramma has tricked it out with a swing, a beanbag toss game, a bowling game, a pool and lots of other trucks and rocks and marbles and...

Getting the Ball Rolling*
The other night, I was talking to Jiyeon, and something she said to me really hit home, which was “Well, I guess that ABR is going to stop for Junegee when the baby is born.” What she meant by this is that since she has been doing the vast majority of manual and ball rolling exercises, she was concerned that once our 2nd son was born, she’d no longer have time to do this, and...

The Curse of the Machine
Junegee gets his ABR hours in in two very different ways: manual and machine. All things considered, he gets A LOT of machine hours, becuase we basically strap the machine on him whenever he has prolonged periods of not moving around much, which are during meals and while he sleeps. Historically, we’ve been getting well over 10 hrs of machine-based ABR in per day. However, contrast that...

Pollen & ABR
Beautiful central Virginia, Charlottesville to be more precise, that’s where we live.  We are surrounded by trees, rolling hills and picture perfect farms.  In other words, we are getting smothered by pollen these days.  With severe multiple food allergies, Junegee has developed seasonal allergies, too.  It was really wonderful to have a couple of weeks of peaceful time in the hammock...

Thanks, Elvis!
Junegee’s new favorite word is ‘Elvis!’  He loves Elvis doll/phone that sings ‘jail house rock’ for 20 sec.  It is his grandma’s which she got many years ago as a gift.  I played Elvis’s Jailhouse rock video from YouTube today.  Junegee was mesmerized enough that I was able to do anterior neck exercise for about 10 minutes.  Well, to tell you the truth, I...

marathon vs. sprint
I managed to put about 25 minutes anterior chest while nursing.  It is a struggle not to doze off while I’m doing that.  Prolactin is really working and I just can’t stay fully awake while nursing…  Other exercises are trickier.  This busy boy of mine protests.  Wiggle, scream, whine and yell.  Well, gotta take a day at a time I guess.

1 hours, 6 minutes
That’s the amount of time we were able to get Junegee still enough to do ABR today. Patience, practice and hope…

Tracking
I just made a google spreadsheet to track the amount of time that we’re spending on each exercise by day, with a handy summary view as well. Gotta love technology, especially as a tool.

First attempt at ABR
Well, first ABR exercise was anterior chest.  2 minutes then 4 minutes.  Junegee was still that much.  I guess he was wondering what we are doing to him.  The issue is ‘HOW are we going to do ABR on VERY busy, active 20 months old boy?’  My hope is that he’ll get used to it and be able to relax.  At least, we did it today and that makes me feel good.  One step at a time.

Getting Ready
We’re just finishing breakfast and after trying to simulate the ABR bench using our bed and his changing mat (crib), we’re going to try to do the Anterior Chest Exercise at home for the first time. Hopefully Junegee can stay still long enough for us to do it.

First Post
We just got back from Montreal yesterday evening, after a very full week complete with evaluations, training, multiple colds, poor attempts at speaking French, and lots of hockey on TV. We’re very excited to start with the ABR therapy, and this blog is where we’ll share our experiences.
